Enriching the lives of Veterans and giving second chances to shelter dogs
Hampton Roads Hounds for Heroes was created in July 2015 in response to the overwhelming need for service or companion dogs for Veterans suffering from PTSD or other equally debilitating psychiatric disorders as a result of military service.
Our goal is to provide a trained dog to a service member who has been medically diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder. The addition of a dog to their treatment regime needs to be deemed beneficial by their physician.
We are choosing dogs from local shelters because we believe that there are countless dogs living at shelters who have the intelligence and drive to become a life saving assistant to a Veteran in need of this type of therapy.
Hampton Roads Hounds for Heroes will provide specially trained rescued dogs to Veterans who have been medically diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or an equally debilitating psychiatric injury which prohibits them
from leading a full and meaningful life.
These dogs are specifically chosen from local shelters and will be professionally trained for Emotional Therapy, Psychiatric Service,
or Companion, depending on the needs of the Veteran.
Our goal is to enrich the life of the Veteran and give a second chance
to a shelter dog in a supportive and respectful environment.
